paraneoplastic syndrome
today
I’m going to talk about paraneoplastic
syndrome because one
of our girl really ask me about that.
Wiki
says like that
A paraneoplastic syndrome is a disease or symptom that is the consequence of the presence of cancer in the body, but is not due to the local presence of cancer cells. These phenomena are mediated by humoral factors (by hormones or cytokines) excreted by tumor cells or by an immune response against the tumor.
Paraneoplastic syndromes are typical among
middle aged to older patients, and they most commonly present with cancers of
the lung, breast, ovaries or
lymphatic system (a lymphoma).Sometimes
the symptoms of paraneoplastic syndromes show before the diagnosis of a malignancy, which has been
hypothesized to relate to the disease pathogenesis
Yes it is.
So they have different set of symptoms
which is related to hormone hypersecretion
You can find it from a text book
So my description basically depends on diagnosis of itFor an example we can take a patient who is having
hyperparathyroidism. So we have to exclude the other causes of
hyperparathyroidism see hyperparathyroidismIf there is hyperparathyroidism which is related to the
gland, biochemical investigation reveals the state of hormone levels and the
state of gland if there is cancer in gland itself we can diagnosis it by doing
imagine techniques.
If hormone levels are altered and gland is normal at that time we have to exclude the primary cases and investigate for other causes. In that case we can investigate for parathyroid related peptide, CXR, CT chest, CT abdomen etc. and we have to find the primary tumour, then do histology and confirm the diagnosis. Finally we can start treatments.
I will post another letter about Parathyroid disorders
